What are the possible reasons for eating too much gas (grand prix 98 gt v6 3.8L)

Im spending too much for commuting to work with this car. My girlfriend with Sunfire doesn't spend even half of what I do.

Maybe Something is wrong in my car?
What can I do to make my car use less gas?

ever measured your fuel economy (using the odo and fuel put into tank) and compared it to what your vehicle is rated for?

Comparing a sunfire to a grand prix is the first problem....with that said you could have an o2 sensor issue or an ignition issue...so many variables....what are your actual MPG's?

    This.

I thought I had gas issues until I decided to stop smashing the gas and start using the cruise button and keeping rpms under 2500 and coasting through lights instead of coming to a complete stop.

Actually sitting at 16.4 in the city. Whicj is awesome compared to two weeks ago when I was at 13.9.

Considering it is a 98 GT I am assuming a higher mileage car, when was the last time routine maintenance was done???

Consider logging your current MPGs (manually, the old fashioned way)
    Change spark plugs
    - plug wires
    - fuel filter
    - air filter
    - if you have the funds service the tranny (pan drop, change filter and refill with fluid, don't flush the tranny)
Then relog your MPGs and if there isn't a change, its you.

I say this because all 5 have the potential to be big factors in how the car drives and how efficient it is by itself, if the plugs/wires are older they could be wearing down and need to be replaced. If the filter air or fuel is getting clogged up its starving itself and having to run harder to perform the same which will use fuel. If the tranny isn't flowing right it can cause it to shift higher or slip and can cause the MPGs to go down. Basically if these things haven't been done lately, it probably needs to be done. If they have all been done then you need to back off the throttle. You can't race your car to work and then gripe about getting bad fuel mileage.

Are your tires inflated properly? Low tires can reduce mileage.
