This write up is from my personal experience from owning 5 60 V6 engines I've done plenty of water pumps on them. So here we go. WARNNING!!! Engine has to be warm or dead cold before starting this project... Removal and Install steps. Step 1. Pop hood Step 2. Slide drain under right front of the car untill you can look down through the top of the engine bay and see it.When its under there it should be right in line with the water pump. Step 3. Pop radatior cap and set aside. Step 4. This is where your tools come into play at. You need both 10mm sockets. On top of the water pump housing there is a bely routing diagram thats held on with 2 10mm nuts and one 100m bolt. First remove the two 10mm nuts on top. Then remove the 10mm bolt on the side of the cover. Know that bolt is about 5 or 6 inchs long. once the cover is unbolted it picks strait up off the studs on top of the water pump housing. Once you have that off set it to the side along with the bolt and nuts. Step 5. Remove the washer bottle and disconnect the battery. Step 6. Remove the coolant recovery tank mine's held on by one 10mm nut on the top right corner. Remove the nut or nuts and set them to the side. there is a hose runing from the tank to a little nipple on the radatior trace the hose from the tank to the radatior. Its clamped in place with either a screw clamp or a pinch clamp remove the clamp and set the tank aside. Step 7. You'll see the water pump pulley and know have good room to work and should have know problems getting to it. There are 4 10mm bolts that hold the pulley on to the pump hub. Take your ratchet and set it to loosen (Remember Righty Tighty Lefty Loosey) Give each of the 4 bolts a quick jerk with the ratchet. If the pulley slips get the flat scr driver and you'll an opening in between the pulley and the front cover wedge the tip of the screw driver inside there and that will help stop the pulley from moving. Step 8. Remove Serptine Drive Belt. To remove the belt pop your socket off the ratchet. On the tensior there is a square opening. The ratchet head will fit in there I forget if the ratchet has to be set t tighten or loosen a bolt to pull the tensior up I' almost certain it needs to be set to tighten. Step 9. Once the four bolts are loose finish taking them out and the set them off to the side. The the pulley will slide strait out and off the hub. Sit the pulley off to the side. The pulley is like a tiny dish so turn it upside down and set the 3 bolts inside it so there with it and not lost. Step 10. Know your down to the water pump its self. You'll around the outside of the pump between 5-8 8mm bolts. Its been a while sense i've done one so I do not remember how many there are. you'll need to pop the mm socket onto the 3/8's ratchet and set it to lossen and remove them one by one and set them aside. Once out the pump will be held in by the old gasket. Step 11. This step is were the water pump finally comes out. Look at the top of the pump were it meets the timing cover. You'll see a litlte gap there. Take the tip of the flat head and lap it on that gap. and give the but end of it a light strike with your hand. That should drive the tip down just enough to let you slowly pry that part of the pump loose. when its loose follow that up around the sides of the pump. Don't be scared coolant is gonna come out. once thats done be ready to catch the pump cause when its loose its gonna fall. Step 12. Once the pump is out you'll see the mating surface. If the gasket did not come off clean. Then take some sand paper or a scraper and slowly scrap it off and make sure its nice and clean and dry. What I like to do after scraping the mating surface off is spray some starting fluid on it to get off and grease and gunk and wipe off the surface with a rag and let it dry. Know on to step 12. Step 13. Remove water pump from box. Grasp pump by its hub and spin it around till you see a triangle thats on the pump point towards you thats the top of the pump. Know with the pump still in hand grab the gasket and get it near by you. Remember that packet of water pump sealer here's were it comes into play. Open the packet and barley smear a light film onto the mating surface of the pump. Know get the gasket and on the gasket there is one bolt hole with a 2 or 3 inch secton beside it thats the top of the gasket. Know with the top of the gasket figured out lay it on the mating surface of the pump corasponding with the triangle on the pump line up the holes and let cure for 10-15 minutes. I like to apply a think layer to the backside of the gasket right when i got to install the pump. Know the pumps ready to be reinstalled. For reinstallation Follow this write up in reverse order. After following the write up in reverse order refill the radatior and coolant take but overfill the coolant because when the thermostat opens it will suck the extra coolant water mix from the tank and make the level right I hope I just helped someone change there water pump thanks for taking the time to read this write up. This write up was based off changing the water pump on my 1992 pontiac grand prix se with the vin t 3.1 v6 The tools needed for the change on the 3100 3400 maybe different but this write up gives you a indepth detail at whats needed to change a water pump. |
