Default Replacing power steering pump + hoses (2001 Grand Prix GT)

My son has a 2001 Grand Prix GT (3.8L) which is getting progressively
worse about losing PS fluid. He's used 2.5 quarts in the last 2
weeks. (and he's using the sealant variety).

So we're gonna try to change out the pump and hoses since
we're going to be knee deep in it anyway.

So how hard is it? I remember the pump as being not too
hard to get too when we replaced the water pump on it
    a few months ago.

    What about the hoses?

    Thanks gang.

Shouldn't be too bad might drop the rear of the subframe some to get more clearance

take the wheel off, pass side, take the lines off the pump first from the wheel well, have a pail to catch the fluid that will leak out.

you take the pump off via the hole in the pulley, 2, 13 mm bolts, in the 12 and 6 o clock positions. pul the dog bones rock the engine forward pull it out.

your gonna need a GM power steering pulley puller to get the pulley off. and to put it on the new pump. this puller can be rented or bought for around 30 bucks. theres no other way to get the pulley off with out damaging it.

the lines, look them over before changing them, it maybe the pump, or the line, narrow it down, fix whats leaking. lines tend to last a long time.

if the lines are broken, they are bolted to the rack on the driver side of the rack. you'll need a 18 mm line wrench works best to get the lines off. dropping the rear of the sub frame a few inches may add some room to work in. you can get to these lines from under the driver side.

and if its leaking out the boots on the rack and pinion, the rack is dead, and thats a whole other how too.

Know its been a long time, but we finally got around to looking at my son's car. Well actually, he works at Advance Auto and one of shops he delivers parts to put his Grand Prix GT up on the rack and inspected it. According to them, its the rack and pinion that's shot, not the power steering pump and hoses.

Everyone is telling him this is a big deal and a hard job.

So how bad is it? They want about $150.00 for the parts and anywhere from another $150.00 to 300.00 for the labor.

Is this something my son and I can do? We put a stabilizer bar on this car last year. How much harder to get to every
    thing is it than that?

Also, is one of those wonderful "how to's" available for this job? Those have been great in the past.

    Thanks everyone.

It's so simple, there is no how to currently. How's this though

Jack and support the vehicle by the drip edge (under front of drivers door)
    Remove both tires (19mm)
Push up on boot on top of power steering connection on driver side and remove 11mm bolt that holds the steering knuckle to the rack. (DO NOT SPIN WHEEL WITH THIS DISCONNECTED!!!!)
Disconnect both outer tie rods from knuckles (unsure mm)
Put a 4x4 across the rear of the subframe and use a jack to hold it up while you undo the two rear subframe bolts, lower the subframe about 4 inches in the back. (18mm bolts)
Disconnect the two rack lines to the power steering pump (17mm I think?)
Remove the two bolts holding the rack to the subframe (18mm)
Wiggle the rack free and out one side.
Wiggle new one in and reverse directons.

To bleed the system, fill the res up, start the car and turn the wheels back and forth 5 times. Turn off, refill and repeat until you have no more noise and the fluid level stays topped off.

the lines to the rack are 18 mm. line wrench works best. and there are how to's with pics out there, the one here disappeared after the site face lift.

Rack and Pinion Writeup (anyone even have 56K anymore??) - Grand Prix Net

rack can be done in your driveway on your back, you just need jack stands and a jack.
