The sun gear in the differential (final drive) also uses a roller thrust washer on both side IRC. It is important that they go back in acing EXACTLY the same way.

Soon as I saw the first pic, I knew which pin it was...and the aluminum confirmed it.

Toss a different diff in and you are all fixed up. Congrats on having the best type of failure and luck in seeing it. The great thing about a diff failure is ..it's the last thing in the fluid path before the filter. So you didn't get that crap inside the various passages of the trans.

That's actually great to know! I was worried about metal being in other parts of the transmission, so that's a huge relief. The parts should be here Friday. Hoping to have it back on the road this weekend.

I pulled the old diff out and of course, that retaining clip broke..

Does anyone have ANY clue where to find that clip? It looks like it's the same one that goes on the CV axle, but I can't find those anywhere, either.

I dont know how far you are from the Aamco in Washington? But I'm sure Dennis would fix you up. He's a great guy and Brian his rebuilder is good at what he does. I am in Morgantown and could fix you up but that is a long trip for a retaining clip.

I'm about 45-50 minutes from Washington. I'll call around to a few trans shops and try to find one tomorrow, unfortunately most are closed on Saturday. I was really planning on getting the car wrapped up this weekend.

If that really is the same clip as the CV axle uses, I guess I could hit up the yard and try to find some clips there to take. If I was closer to you, I'd drive right down to WV and get one!

    She runs again.

Well this morning I spent a lot of time calling and visiting dealers and various places. For what it's worth, the GM clip, PN 26045399, is completely discontinued. The nearest place that had one was somewhere in New York. I stopped by a trans shop on the way back who said he could certainly get me one, but he wouldn't have it until Monday. I got on my phone and started looking up other trans shops. Found one with no hours listed, so I gave him a call.

Rang to his personal cell, which I didn't realize at first. I explained the situation to him and he said he had some at his shop and if I'd stop by, he'd give me one. I tell him I'm on the way, and says "well, actually, I'm not open on Saturday, but I only live a few minutes away. Stop by at noon, and I'll get you hooked up." Went down later and met the guy, we BS'd for a while. He got me the clip and I absolutely compensated him for his time coming out. I thought that was super cool of the guy.

Anyhow, the car is all back together and everything seems A-OK. If you're going to do this job, just make it easy on yourself and grab a tub of the ATP Transmission Assembly Lube. So glad I did before I started, it made sticking the washers/bearings in a piece of cake.

Good to hear your back up and running! I would however suggest in a few thousand miles is change the fluid and filter again in the transmission, you never know what shavings are left in there, and that should be that last of it.

Yeah I guess I got VERY lucky. I wouldn't have been in the trans if I hadn't been installing a shift kit. See, modding your car pays off!

As for the clip, yep, it's identical to the axle one. Take a look at Dave's diff install thread (i fixed the pics on the last page), it's the yellow clip.
