Hmm, seems steep for just a filter. I'm still thinking.

At first glance and absent the experience with it, I would agree with you, but let me put it this way.

    1 Radiator $200
2 Hoses (upper, lower), Approx. $35
    2 Gallons 50/50 Coolant, $25

Thats just for replacing the radiator due to all the gunk that got in it. So $60 for a filter is cheap. Additionally, consider there is a filter on your fuel, oil, transmission fluids, why not the coolant?

you know I never thought of it, but why no filter for coolant, or power steering fluid?

Well this is a coolant filter and I find it very strange that no filter is provided for the coolant. I dont know if all of them do, but I would say a vast majority of your heavier duty trucks, cargo trucks, over the road vehicles all have coolant filters and in addition to that the filters have additives built into the filter so that the coolant additives are replenished.

The power steering system and brake system I have given thought to and I came up with the following as to why there are no filters on those two systems:

    1. They are both high pressure systems that would require some stout and possibly expensive filters.
    2. The fluid flow in these systems is bi-directional. The fluids for the brakes and power steering have to flow both directions, not in just one direction as with the oil, coolant and fuel. So even if you did put a filter on these systems, it would filter one direction, then as the fluid flowed back in the other direction it would just knock loose what was trapped by the filter and back into the system.
    3. Fluid capacities are so small

Now, the put power steering fluid coolers in heavy duty trucks and in some cars (my last 4cyl car had a ps fluid cooler). So if there is a cooler on the fluid, its easier to put a filter on it. Just like you could do for the transmission fluid. I have put external filters on my transmission fluid before and likely will in the GP when I put in the rebuilt tranny.

Actually the power steering system isn't bi-directional. You have the pump and two hoses. One hose is pressure and one is return. There is no need for a filter in a brake system, you don't move enough fluid to make use of a filter.

Okay, thats good to know, they were just things I had come up with in the thought process of why filters wernt already on those systems. Guess we can scratch part of that off now.

As for brake fluid, you may not move that much fluid, but if it is moving, then it can pick up debris and move it to less than ideal locations. May not be all that probable but that is a consideration. In addition, brake fluid can absorb water, so you would have to have a filter that could not only filter out contaminants but also remove water and that is no easy task.

Now that I think about it, the filter looks like a screen. Could this not easly and cheaply be assembled from Home Depot stuff. I wouldn't do it because if I made it, it would look like crap. But I'm just sayin.

but how would the home depot stuff hold up under the heat and chemicals?

I have given CONSIDERABLE thought to this, even drew up my own designs and let me tell you what I came up with.

    1. The screw on cap. Thats the killer right there because its got a gasket. Being round and threaded thats easy enough to do, but then you run into issues with the inlet/outlet set up. Because its a cylindrical filter, it makes it tough.

    2. The internal screen is directional. It only goes in one way and so you have to have the filter oriented correctly to the coolant flow. In addition to that, there is the tray thing that traps larger stuff (they call it the sediment trap I believe) that isnt trapped by the filter screen itself. This trap makes it so you dont have to remove the entire filter to clean out all the gunk. Otherwise you would have to have some way to clean out the heavier stuff that settled to the bottom of the filter.

    3. You could make it square in shape and that would take care of the inlet/outlet issues (sealing against a flat surface rather than a curved one) but then you would have issues with trying to recreate the cap that screws down and seals that way.

I totally believe it could be done with plumbing supplies, but you would be introducing so many other sealing surfaces, I wonder how reliable it would be. You just have three place to seal now and Ive been using mine for a while now, probably more than a year and no leaks.

As well, the screen is in a V type shape so that it gets trapped and is harder to knock loose by the coolant flow. There is also two different screens with the filter. One course filter screen and one fine screen.

Im not saying it cant be done, Im just saying I have spent a great deal of time in the Lowes plumbing section trying to figure out just how to do it. You also have to keep in mind the different hose sizes as well, though with our cars all you'd have. to have is 1-1/4". Ive tried but Im still open to ideas and suggestions. I could be entirely possible Ive missed or overlooked something.

just think of the amount of money spent to make something work, could probably have bought 2 kits by the time you get done, and it not be as well finished
