    Default Swapped Thermostats

DISCLAIMER: Let me just start by saying I'm taking sides nor is this thread meant to be a debate. I'm just posting this to show what I found and what I did.

So I decided it was time to swap the 195 for a 180. Now the question of to drill or not to drill. Taking a look at the one I was replacing determined this for me. The one on the left is the 195 unit. It has a hole already in it. So based on this I decided to go ahead and drill the new one. I used a 1/16 drill bit which is a tad larger than the old one, but I'm not going to split hairs.

You may notice that the old one is offset, this because there is a check ball on the back side. Here a pic for you visual learners.

Sorry for the crappy pics, but they were taken with my phone.

Just let me reiterate that I'm not taking sides on to drill or not to drill. I'm just posting this for informative purposes. If you wish to post and say I shouldn't of drilled it or that it was a waist of time, please go some where else. There are plenty of other threads just for you guys that like to argue.

I think drilling a 1/16" hole is a good thing. If anything it helps the system bleed faster. I've been doing this for years. I think others do it too, some drill more than one hole.

Becareful though, too many holes you're heater won't work worth a damn because your motor won't go up to temperature. I personally found that x2 1/16" holes were too much, just by going with one was just right and I still had a heater here in Oklahoma.....

I personally have a summer tstat and a winter tstat. I drilled two holes the first time and notice it run alittle cooler which is what I wanted. Until winter hit in Jerome, ID and it took 15 minutes to get to where the heater was warm. So ya diddo Iron Indian.

Thanks for informative/constructive posts. These are the kind of posts that people need. Not the ones where people get going back and forth about how it is stupid to this or that and you're an idiot kind of stuff.

So thanks again for sharing what you did/tried and the results you got. I tried searching before I drilled my single hole and all I found was a few threads where people were going at each other about it didn't make difference, it does make a difference, blah blah blah. Sorry but forums like this should be for people looking for first hand knowledge of a certain mod and peoples experiences.
