Reinstalling steering wheel buttons - How??

This is on my 98, got a set of replacement buttons (my one set didn't light up), not in as good shape as I was hoping they'd be so I have to swap my buttons to the used unit, prior to that I'd like to make sure the light works in the one I received.

Anyways - just how the heck are you supposed to install these, couldn't GM give an extra inch on the wiring to make it a easier on the connection - please tell me I don't have to remove the airbag, this, that and the steering column just to reconnect it.

Any help is appreciated..

ya those things are a *****. to get mine back in I think i removed the plastic around the steering column behind the steering wheel and you can either rotate the wheel or it just gives you access to more wire you can yank thru the wheel, i forget. thats what i did any way, its a real *****.
