I have one and it works well...I only use it for moving radar and small towns with stationary radar that can't afford laser...unless you buy a super expensive detector that can actually jam a laser the whole laser detector part don't work. I bought my cobra for 10 bucks of craigslist and it works fine I just speed but never rely solely on the detector

To me, they are pointless to have unless its a high end device. Anything below that is not sufficient. With the technology the police use now, they will mark you before your radar will even go off, if at all. Not to mention, depending on state, if the cops catch you with one, they can confiscate it. So, the actual functionality of the radar to me is not worth it because they don't actually stop you from getting tickets, but rather early warning and sometimes it too late.

Whatever you get is infinitely less effective than common sense.

Lots of police now use nothing more that stopwatches - any detector no matter how effective is defeated using this method. Plus, many use instant on detectors. They don't leave them on - they fire them up and sense your speed in seconds leaving you no time to slow down.

I think they're all a waste of money, but it's yours to waste...

Great for reducing points/fines when you get a ticket. Number of my friends have been told, "Now, I don't know how fast you were going, but I saw slam on the brakes before I clocked you at 72mph..."

I've never gotten a ticket with mine on. You have to pay a lot for good ones though. I paid I think $350 for my Escort 8500 a few years go. Once you get used to your area and can detect false readings (from store anti-theft devices, interstate traffic flow detectors, etc), they work great!

People that say they don't work don't know how to use them, or drive too stupid. I have a cheapo Cobra and have not gotten a ticket since I started using it.

mines a cheap cobra...i use it only when on the highway to help against moving radar but im still scanning for an officer with laser on the side or middle of the road....just dont be an idiot and think that the radar detector will save you all the time and do 90 all the time without checking the road...

    Keep in mind...

I CONSTANTLY speed (25 mile one-way daily commute plus tavel etc), I have no radar detector, and I've had one speeding ticket (2 points, no impact on insurance) costing $100 over the past 20 years. That ticket was an over-the-hill speed trap where a detector would not have worked.

My point: EVEN IF a detector could have saved me that ticket, it would be dollars chasing nickels.

I payed 300 dollars for the escort passport 8500 and works great. it has saved me a bunch of times and has a far range. the only thing you need to do is turn off the x-band because it goes off all the time because of store security systems but police dont use it. I live in the suburbs of chicago and the police rarely use lasers. Just k and ka bands
