    Default Non Variable Steering Rack

    Hi,

I have a 2005 Base Grand Prix and need to replace the rack.

I have been shopping around trying to find good deal. Does anyone have any recommendations on where to get a re-manufactured Non Variable assist steering rack?

I have found this listing on eBay from Detroit, Dearborn Axel. price $105.00. (should I trust this?) 1997 2009 Buick Chevy Pontiac Complete Power Steering Rack and Pinion Assembly | eBay

    Thank you.

ill vote not to get a rebuilt 105 dollar rack, you get what you pay for in the end.

either get a junk yard rack, or pony up for a good rebuild from a parts store with a warranty.

i put a used rack in last year, its still kicking. cost $75.00

I'll second that vote. No rebuilds. Either get the stock j-yard rack or one w/ a warranty. Search Ebay for some OEM GM ones. I got lucky and ran across an OEM GM one for the cost of a rebuilt one and that was with the Magnasteer, so your's should be cheaper.

I have had good success with Dearborn/Detroit Axle parts. Awesome pricing and the parts are good quality u.s. made (obviously)

I've bought a set of struts and bearings from there before I sold it i had no issues at 20k miles. I see the car around but not sure if he's had issues.

AT the same time. My previous 04 had a stock variable assist rack go bad. Actuator failed in the new one.. replaced it then that one had a bad seal. 3rd time was a charm. This was a GM "all brand" (their lower tier of parts) not some random company or an autozone replacement. I do know they were remanufactured..

so I'll have to agree if I ever by one for my compg it'll be brand new.

Anything that isn't GM OE service is aftermarket part quality.

Professional grade is premium aftermarket, and Delco Advantage is economy aftermarket.

if you want to front all this money up front. or you could get it from a local parts store and have it in hand and your core charge back faster.

from the bottom of that sale.
**This is an exchange part, meaning we need your old part back. A $500 refundable core deposit is required in addition to the price of the part. You can add the core deposit to your payment by Paypal or credit card, and once we have received your good core, the deposit is refunded back to you. The part will not be shipped until we have received your core deposit. A UPS pre-paid return label is included with your order.**

I spoke with the seller and the core deposit is $150. This is a new Delphi steering rack OEM. I think its a good deal for being new.

the used one comes with tie rod ends and the intermittent shaft on it. (well maybe 1/2 of it) not a bad price really.

and the other one will still cost 400, till you get the 150 back, could be a week with shipping and BS. when for the same price you could get it locally. and can get it warrantied quick and easy if picked up locally.

    Thanks for the help.

What type of parts store could I get the same new OEM part at? Everything I have found is remanufactured.

What would be a fair labor charge for installation of the steering rack?

    Thanks!

    NEED SOME HELP!!!!

So I purchased the used rack from eBay, Morad Parts Company - 3800 Motors, Transaxles, & Stock Parts for $100.00 with shipping.

I received it the other day and when I opened it up there was fluid all over. The open holes for the power steering lines are capped off, so its not from there.

The fluid seems to be coming from under the white plastic housing. Really it poured out from the red arrow below.

Please let me know if this is an issue and should I return the rack? Not sure if when torqued down if this will still occur?

Ed's good for inspecting before he disassembles cars so it provably did not show any signs of leakage at that time. The seals are designed to seal with pressure the more pressure the tighter the seal. This means with no pressure on the seals during shipping fluid leaking is normal. I would be more worried that the rubber seals have a break and check to make sure that they are good. Only way to know for sure is to install and watch for leaks for a while. My 2 cents

Ed stands behind his stuff very well. Call and talk to them. Likely you'll be speaking to Erik or one of the other guys. Be nice..explain the issue and I'm sure they'll work with you if it's an issue.

    Thank for the help.

So the used rack was a no go, it was leaking from the input seal. I tried to buy the eBay new OEM rack and they didn't have any.

So what are my options for a rack? I call GM and they want $470.00 for a re manufactured rack. 12mth / 12,000mile warranty. Napa has a reman. for $215, but not sure the brand.

    Any help is appreciated........
