Default Won't Shift Out of Park (sometimes)... Ignition Switch?

Helloooo.. I just purchased a 99 GT and am getting some minor things fixed that I want to take care of. I have done some research about similar problems people have had but just want to ask if anyone could help.

Two days ago, I took the dash apart to modify the XM satellite kit to work with my iPod. That went smoothly, but I realized when I was putting the dash covers back on, I had pulled a single black wire out, which led out/in from just above the floor trim on the drivers side by the door hinge (I'll take a picture tomorrow).

Since then, I've had some trouble with getting the car to shift out of park.. the release on the shifter won't budge but I can hear a click in the dash when I press it with the brake down. I'll turn the car off and on two or three times and then it will release like it normally should, and I can get into gear and it drives fine. I've read that this could be the Ignition Switch or Ignition Switch Module (if there's a difference?) My heat Blower also only works on 5 'MAX', which I read is (somehow) related to this too, but that was always not working. I'm hoping that wire is suppose to lead to the Ignition Switch but I could be wrong.

Any Suggestions??

Bizarre..mine just started doing the same thing today. My manual told me to pop off the plastic cover to the Shift Lock Release, use a screwdriver or key to push the button inside while holding the release button on the control . (your manual will say it better than I can) But it worked. It was just a random thing (I wasn't doing any wiring) but it won't shift out of park at all now.
If you can figure out why, please post. I hope it has nothing to do with a sensor!

I have a copy of the GM techline manual, but it only works on windows and I'm at school now only with my mac :\. For a temporary fix tho.. I took the tiny cover off the shift lock release.. drilled a 3/16" hole and put in a 3/4" inch long screw then snapped it back into place. Now no more need for a screwdriver or pens to release it.

Thanks, I actually picked up another shifter with the module and I am going to install it this weekend. I was looking for a previous post that had a link to the step by step instructions for this change out. Thanks again and be careful of that lock out bypass as it might allow you to bump into park while in motion...not a good thing.

GT
I am looking for the pinout diagram for the shift lock plug under the shifter for my 2002 GP SE. Any help would be appreciated.

Did you ever get what you needed and solve the problem?

I never got the pinout so I used a test light to make sure I wasn't connecting 2 hot wires and went with my best guess for the 2 wires in question. 50% chance of getting it right the first time and I did. One thing of note. The wire keeper that snaps into the frame of the shifter seems to hold the harness in too tight of a position so that the shifting action over time probably work hardens the the wires, causing them to break. I didn't snap mine back in this time. I'll see if that helps. The only wiring diagrams I came up with were not correct for what I actually had.

thanks for the info.

Mine ended up being a rusty shift leaver. A little grease and it was OK. It was worn though and if it happens again then I'll need to replace it.

Fixing the two broken wires has fixed the problem as well as the "key won't go into off and out" position problem. I guess sometimes it's just a simple repair vs throw a new part in there. Thanks for all you folks' ideas because you stimulated me to think "a little more to the left".
