Default Fuel Gauge Problems

Mine is all wonky. Yes, that's a word. It never seems to be right. When it's almost empty, it shows full. When it's 1/2 full, it shows a random amount between empty and full. I have to judge my fuel by mileage. I hate this. Any ideas?

and one would go about doing this by…? Sorry, I have no idea. I know how to change the fuel pumps on the 88(?)-96s, but not on this one. Is it close to the same?

Moved this thread to the body control with the rest of the fuel gage questions currently being asked.

Replacing the module is pretty easy. If you open up your pass through, peel the carpet back you will see a little access door. It's got a few nuts that hold it down. Remove that, and it's right there. Unplug it, remove the expansion ring with a set of needle nose pliers, and the module will pop up out of the tank. Remove, Replace and Reverse the directions.

If you do this... try and take some pictures and make a How-To for the site! Seems lots of people have this issue with the gauge.

There is a similar thread here that you may want to read. I posted there about replacing the entire pump. It was easier for me to just pull out the entire pump assembly and replace it with a good used one from Ed Morad. And mine worked well up until I sold it.

Part number varies with your vehicle year and model.

The pass through is the door that goes from your passenger compartment through the back seat and into the trunk.

Thanks.

Is this usually the problem when you find the gauge not responding with the proper amount of fuel in the tank?

I just know that on average, I get 20 miles to a gallon in town and that is 75% of my driving, that I can get 350 miles out of a tank. It has been shuffling a lot lately.
