Bong blamed for fire at MU fraternity

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Fire investigators are blaming an unattended bong for a fire at the Sigma Chi fraternity at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

No one was hurt. But Sunday night's fire occurred on the same floor where a student died in a 1999 blaze.

Fire officials said the blaze could have been worse. A student used a fire extinguisher to knock back the flames in the third-floor bedroom before firefighters arrived and finished extinguishing some still-smoldering debris.

Damage from the fire is estimated to total around $5,000.

Battalion Fire Chief Steve Sapp says police confiscated the bong and took samples to determine whether it was used for drugs.

Fraternity president Daniel Patterson says a small piece of charcoal left on a windowsill, not a bong, started the fire.

He says the fraternity has a no smoking and drug policy in effect.

Besides the obvious fire, I found this part of the quote simply laughable.

Yeah I am Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure it was used to smoke "regular" tobacco and not anything illegal!

Some reporters really need to think about what they are saying sometimes. Granted yeah the Police have to test it, but its a CAPTAIN OBVIOUS moment here.
Maybe Michael Phelps can comment on the contents?

I like the whole "fraternity has a no smoking and drug policy in effect" ....thats going to stop them? Im glad no one was hurt..but yes very funny

Umm just throwing this out there, an unattended bong without any source of negative flow isn't going to stay cherried very long...

Not to mention that umm, unless he was packing a FAT 1"+ bowl there is no way a tiny bud would amass to a fire that big lol. I am going to have to say that someone got a little to drunk and was playing with a lighter or something else was the source. And that charcoal is a joke ahaha, typical quickly thought of excuse... But why would it be there and why would someone put it there while its still hot?

In their defense, the police can't just assume it was used for drugs without evidence (although I don't know if they can prosecute anyone even if it was used for drugs, since they can't prove who was smoking it).

Also, in our unfortunate sue-happy world, the article can't just defame the character of the upstanding college students

by assuming they would smoke weed.

I hear ya War, I use to be a Police Officer, so I know exactly what you speak of. YES they can not prosecute anyone for "using," but they can prosecute for having drug paraphilnia* in most cases. I just found it funny how they worded it. Any right thinking person would know what a BONG is used for it. And we almost ALL know its not for smoking loose leaf tabacco
