The day before yesterday, gas at the Casey's next door to my shop was $2.84 per gallon. Yesterday it dropped to $2.74, then this morning it was $2.93. LOL! Down 10, up 20.

I wish I could do that with the stuff I sell, but that would be price gouging

Geddy, its funny you should mention this topic.....Here is a rant I posted on my MYSPACE, Jan 13, 2007

Quote:
Over the years I have found that the Oil Companies can get away with murder. It does not matter which political party is in power, so dont buy into the Cheney/Haliburton hype. This has been going on for alot longer than that.

Just to give you an recent example, think about this. Every time there is a major storm in the Gulf of Mexico, the oil companies jack up the price of oil in anticipation of possible shortages due to damage of the oil rigs or refining capabilities. This is done up to a week in advance of the storm.

Now that oil is not in high demand due to the warm winter, there is a surplus which is driving the price down. As of yesterday, oil is at its lowest price per barrel in 19 months, so why is the price not dropping? Well according to the oil companies it will take about a week for the falling price of oil to affect the price at the pump. This is due to already having about a weeks worth of reserve built up, which was manufactured using the higher price of oil. This I can understand.

What I cant understand is when the storms of the Gulf move in, dont we still have a weeks worth of gas in the reserves? The answer is yes, and the oil companies drive the price up at the pump to MAKE MORE MONEY AND CAPITALIZE ON CATASTROPHIC EVENTS.

The only way to end this chain is to write to your congress person. If 25% of the people in the US flodded Wasington DC with mail about the oil companies, they would have no choice but to listen or loose a vote in the next election, and as tight as the elections are running now, they will listen.

It's $3.34 for premium where I'm at... When I was in Holland a few months back, gas there was about $8 USD per gallon for regular.

$8 per gallon would totally suck. I fear the GTP would have to sit in the driveway while I got incredible legs riding my Fuji bike instead.

Default Re: Gas Prices!!!

guys guys..... please, your blame is in ALL the wrong places.

1. Gas Tax is anywhere from 10-30% of the cost and is the primary factor for gas price variation.

2. due to the tree-hugging piece of shXXts the government hasnt allowed any new refineries since the 1970s (there are over 100 new alcohol refineries THIS YEAR though) how many times has our oil demand multiplied since then?

3. they also wont let the oil companies even LOOK for new oil (china is taking oil from the gulf and we CANT!!!!) this also requires us to buy from Venezuelan dictators who hate america.

I understand your anger, PLEASE DIRECT IT TOWARDS THE CORRECT PARTY!!!

the more regulation the oil companies have the more expensive the oil is. PERIOD this was PROVEN in the 70s. like waiting in line for gas? how about paying 7/gal reg just because bureaucrats on capital hill think that we should.

there IS competition beetween the companies and this is what keeps the companies from taking as much money as they want. its easy to blame the "big bad oil companies" and make up conspiracy theorys but theres just no such thing. lets be realistic, how many people would need to be "in on it" for a big huge conspiracy to work huh?

how about just looking at the taxes? think about your gas being up to 70 cents cheaper, ALWAYS.

and if your worried about running out theres enough oil in alaska alone to run the US for 700 yrs. but WERE NOT "ALLOWED" TO USE IT!!!

What Syn said is what I've been saying also in regards to our demand for SUVs. Car makers create based on demand and profit. Since our demand was very high for SUVs, they kept making them and still do. They provided the highest profit so they weren't going to stop.

However, I don't believe it an oil company conspiracy but they are involved. Business is supply and demand. But when I heard of the record profit earnings in the billions made me raise an eyebrow. If you're making that much profit, prices could go down. But I don't have enough information to state that is fact.

That's why I'm glad they are looking more towards hybrids and other ways to gain efficiency.

Here is a breakdown of gasoline taxes per state. Federal plus state taxes equate to approx 20% the cost of gas.
Gasoline tax information - Ohio Gas Prices

With things like this, it's usually not one political party's fault but several individual groups trying to take advantage of a situation.

I'm not going to debate on the cause whether it is liberals or conservatives as many theories are based on their personal feelings using only facts that gear towards their belief and ignoring others.

We can drill in other places but the supply will eventually go down. I've heard theories that oil isn't from fossile creatures but from the earth itself so the supply is plenty. Regardless, the supply will deminish.

So...what's the solution? From a business standpoint, we (you and I) need to reduce the demand. Make the vehicles more efficient and actually want these efficient vehicles. The key word is efficient, not us buying 3 cylinder cars with 23 hp. Make V6 engines with 260 hp but get 40 mpg highway. Smell what I'm cookin?

I can see this tread turning ugly pointlessly so I'm going to drop off.
