Default Flooded Basement

Durn it. With all the rain in Northern Virginia last night, my basement got some flooding. Carpet in my prison cell/office is more or less 50% wet/50% dry. I'll probably cut it out, as my office is filled will electronic equipment and in the winter its a regular static factory. Wife's office/guest room had a bit of damage, and our family room/TV room had a bit near the back sliding glass door, and all by the front near the windows. The back, it came in near the glass door as the seal wasn't great. The front is about 12-18 inches "buried" so I'm afraid there's a crack somewhere in my foundation.

Insurance says anytime water enters the house, it's flooding. And since I don't have flood insurance, it's gonna be my dime to get the carpet repaired. There's goes my tax return...

That sucks! I'd recommend getting flood insurance ASAP, especially with a house with a basement. I've known people who have gotten in the situation as you. Good luck with everything...

It's not as bad as I thought, after having some carpet cleaners come out. First, they live in my subdivision so I got a discount. For $500, they sucked up the water out of the pads and dried the carpet, and are even giving me some new pads. A few pieces of paper got ruined as well, but nothing drastic as I didn't really have puddles of water. And for the price of flood insurance, I'm probably better off just banking $500 for the 1 time every 4-5 years we get so much rain that this happens. I've also talked to neighbors who have built up the dirt around their house, as I think that's what happened. The water got so saturated that as it got lower and lower, it finally met the gap between my slab and house in slipped in through there.
