i put car in gear drives for a little while then tranny disengages and the car wont move until you shut it off and restart. The tranny makes a grinding noise a couple of seconds after restart and then will disengage again after 10 seconds of driving. Last edited by justin usher; 06-26-2009 at 04:15 PM.

I have talked to a number of guys with this problem as well as rebuilt a few local transmissions and had a chance to drive the car to experience it. All scenarios were from a clogged filter because a lot of debris was trapped in it from the torque converter clutch coming apart. Excessive clutch or metal debris will severly restrict fluid flow through the dacron filter material and it will swell near shut and with low flow the pump can no longer build suffecient pressure and cant move the volume it needs to so the trans falls out of gear. Shutting the car off will allow things to settle until you start it and the debris restricts the flow again. Some guys have tried installing a new filter and it helped for a few days but the problem came back.

thank you for the info. I just changed the fluid and filter one month ago there was alot of sediment on the magnet. could the filter have bean a bad product? so I would need a transmission flush or do I need a new torque converter? I am taking it to a transmission shop for a free check. thanks again Last edited by justin usher; 07-02-2009 at 05:36 PM.
