Default P1704 code

I got a 1704 code. It translated to transmission problems.
I got a L32 engine with a GT tranny. It this an indication I'm losing the tranny?

Should I do a fluid change?

that's not necessarily correct, though, as this particular code is manufacturer specific... so if the info you found was from a ford, it's not gonna be right... dontcha just luv redundant stuff!

that being said, the only site i could come up with that had the P1704 code in reference to a GM vehicle was indeed similar:

Digital TRS Failed to Transition States in KOEO / KOER

essentially stating that the transaxle range switch isnt acting the way it is supposed to...

Yea, I originally got the info from a Ford 150 site. From what I understand, the "1" in P1704 stood for factory specific. Guess I didn't pay attention to it clearer.

Now this worries me. I had to have someone tear into the transaxle before to replace a bad solenoid. One tiny part equated to almost $1500.00. Not fun.

I erased the code but if the code comes back, will the tranny will have to be pulled to replace the switch? Is it critical?

(Rats, couldn't edit the last entry).
Guess the question is if the range switch is internal or external on a '99 4T65E (non-HD). If external, how would I replace it?

Okay, I would have originally stated that it was solely external, but Trannyman posted information about the internal switch alignment and the symptoms you would get from that, the title is something along the line of PRNDL switch. Check that and see if any of that pertains to your situation.

There is an external switch as well, on top of the transmission just behind where the top pressure port is (where many put their tranny temp sensors). I suppose its possible there could be an issue with it. The last GP I had, I had to replace that switch on but it was a different engine, different tranny, etc.

You might send Trannyman a PM and see if he can offer any advise if he doesnt post in here.

the info that trannyman posted was for the internal range switch, that is NOT found on the 97-03 GP's... the GP's use external.

Trannyman95 will become famous soon enough
Default Re: P1704 code

What car is this code from? I have no info from it and the GM service page says it doesnt exist on a GP from 99-04 range. If it really is for the trans range switch then it IS external on 99-03 grand prixs as Toasty said above. There is also a pressure switch manifold inside the trans bolted to the valve body which has hydraulic switches to tell the pcm when each gear position is hydraulically applied. As long as your trans works fine and your gear indicator lights on the dash work properly for each position you should be fine and I would really be curious if that code popped up again as its not making a lot of sense right now.

I wrote the code down on a receipt and completely misread it (mixed in with other numbers I wrote down).

The code was P0171 (lean bank condition).

Sorry Guys, for wasting you time like that.
