I personally don't like the sound of a 3800 with no resonator and cat. There is an exhaust thread in here somewhere where people posted vids of their cars exhaust. I would check that thread out. Maybe you would be better off keeping the res and getting some aftermarket mufflers.

No res can sound good with the right mufflers. I doubt it would sound right on stock mufflers though.

As one with the resonator removed on stock mufflers I will say that I would have preferred to leave the resonator in there in hindsight. It doesnt sound horrible, but its not all that good compared to others Ive heard.

Now this may sound a little noobish, but im not to sure what exactly a down pipe is. I believe its what connects from the headers to the exhaust under the vehicle (headers to resinator?).

How much does this usually run?

Very right, the downpipe is the pipe between the headers and the cat back. the cat is in the down pipe, but most after market downpipes don't have cats

Default Re: Removing the resonator. How does it sound?

I've had several exhaust combos on my car over the years.

On a completely stock exhaust, removing the res won't hardly change the sound at all. It maybe a touch louder, nothing noticeable though. Even with a catted downpipe the sound won't change much. For awhile I ran a 3" RT DP w/ cat bolted to my stock cat-back minus the res. Again, it didn't sound much louder if at all. Now with a catless 3" DP it sounded bad. I of course did muffler changes etc etc

Today i'm back with my stock mufflers because the others I tried sounded like crap. Several things factor in sound of the exhaust. I think what helped me out a bit is the diameter of pipe used. The exhaust I have on the car now is the longest i've kept an exhaust on this car and it will most likely not change, although I may add a cutout. I run a complete 3" Exhaust, No cat, No Res, 2.25" Y pipe, Stock Mufflers with FT Tips. I had this setup for a long time on PEMs and now i'm running on TOGs. I think the TOGs deepened the sound a little. Its about as good as you'll get for a V6.

Thats my 2 cents...

My Imp sounds find with SLP Powerflos, a little drone, but nothing I haven't tuned out and don't mind hearing now and then. Plus, when I punch it, I hear that S/C whine that overpowers any other noise. :-)

I'll probably be getting the res cut from my GP, as it's rusting. I don't mind the sound and would rather just pay $60-$70 to have it cut out and a straight pipe put in place than spend the money on a new one.
