check the oil, it could be a head gasket, you could also have cracked the plastic elbow at the water pump to intake. If it is evaporating the system isn't pressurized

Did you bleed the coolant system properly after you changed the water pump?

How hot is it getting?

Like Zef said, did you bleed the coolant system to get all the air out of it? If you have an air bubble in the thermostat housing, it will not operate properly.

Have you tried replacing the thermostat? for what they cost you may want to look into this.

OR
does it only heat up in traffic or does it get hot on the highway also.

It's a plastic coolant elbow, and there are two of them.

The other elbow is further down the tensioner and goes into the block. You can remove the tensioner by removing the bolts and pulling straight towards the passenger side of the car. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Buy two of them. you can get them in the help section of any auto parts store. The other one will crack on you when you take it out. Also sometimes half of the elbow cracks in the housing so make sure you get it all out before putting the new one in.
