Default air intake ?

just wondering , i was looking under the hood of my 99 gp and was wondering if removing the original air intake set-up and running a cone filter on the air intake has any advantages. i've seen the filter and pipes they sell on e-bay , worth it ? i like the car but really dont have any intentions of doing any serious modding as its my daily to and from work driver.

Well it helps the engine breathe better. There will always be arguments as to whether or not that is worth it. I would ask you to try this and let you determine whether or not the intake will help.

Go outside and jog around the block with your mouth taped close so you can only breathe through your nose. If you make it through that, then go back out and jog around the block without the tape on your mouth and see which one is easier to do.

People tend to only focus on the performance aspects of an upgrade and the quite frankly most mods are not limited to this function alone.

So my opinion is that an intake is worth it in that the engine is able to breath a bit more freely, it definitely improves (makes louder) the sound of the blower if you have one. So you kinda have to take it all under consideration. But if you look purely at performance gains, I doubt they would be significant enough to light any fires but throttle response would improve.

you tryin to kill me, that almost made me pass out........... seriously , i know it wont throw me back in the seat any harder just by doing that. just wondering more if id be harming anything , fuel milage or throttle response. doing a cold air kit like the write up i saw (which is excellent by the way)to me isnt worth that amount of time for a daily driver with no mods , but slappin a cone on if it helps i would do. you pretty much answered my questions.

Cool. I kinda put that in there for you as for the benefit of others that come in and want to know if it would help or not.

My bare MINIMUM on a car as far as mods go would be an intake and ignition, maybe some tweaks to help it run a tad bit cooler.

You're not going to be harming anything, thats for sure (unless you just use the worlds worse filter and let all kinds of gunk in your engine). Throttle response should be slightly better and I have seen cases in which a freer flowing air filter helped mileage.

I mean, maintenance people will tell you that if your filter gets clogged it will cost you mileage so it only stands to reason that increased air flow should help mileage to a point.

When I put an intake on my l36 I really noticed the gains with the butt-0-meter, I still think it is the best cheap mod you can do to these motors.

Why not go with a K&N drop in filter for your airbox. See how it works, then go from there.

I had one of these and it is a waste of $30. You can get a decent cone filter for a little less than that, then all you need is a piece of pipe and you got an fwi.

Yeah I would tend to agree. If you are going to do an intake, might as well do a FWI or if you want to spend the money, get an aftermarket system. But I think a FWI is better in my opinion and cheaper in the long run.
