| For some reason I think there is already a thread someone on here mentioning the end of production for the 3800 motor but I don't know where to look for it. Anyways here is a news clip highlighting the closing of the 3800 plant. abc12.com: Flint Engine North stops production of 3800 V-6 engine 8/22/08 |

| Someone said something to me a while ago about GM stopping making the 3800 and I didn't believe them but I guess it's true. I don't understand why they would stop making it. It is a very very good engine. We have 2 cars with the 3800 right now and they are both great engines. |

GM is an IDIOT. I'm assuming the 3.9 is the 'official' replacement of the 3.8. I don't know for sure though. Only problem is the 3.9 is a gas guzzling POS. |

| One reason why ED was smart and bought a truck load of brand new motors from GM. He knew this was happening years ago, and was stocking up on new replacements. I too have been stocking up. I have 3 extra motors that are still good. 1 needs rebuild fully though, and one thats really-really bad, which will be turned into another coffee table some day soon. ![]() ~F~

1.) It's not the most popular engine on the market. Why do we have only a handful of dedicated vendors? Look at the LSx engines, RB26 engines, Nissan 3.5L, and the Ecotecs. All of which are more "popular" than the 3800. 2.) It hasn't outlasted any other engine. Examples could be the 350 or the 4.3L Vortec in GM alone. The 3800 in its current form (as the Series I/II/III lines) has only been around for 20 years. Even then, Series II/III have very little to do with Series I, so you could say the current engine only lasted about 13 years. GM has plenty of engines that are more technological than the 3800 to replace it. Do I agree with this decision anyway? No. The 3800 carried GM during tough times, and it's like putting down an old pet. But, it's not like our 3800's are going to stop running tomorrow, and GM built so many we'll have cheap spare parts for decades.

| FWIW, the 350 went through SEVERAL revisions thruought the years to become more powerful, and more fuel efficient. The carbed versions have very little in common with the one that was eventually replaced by the 5.3 in 1999. You can trace the buick 3.8 back to 1962 before it was sold off to AMC and then bought back years later. The Small block 350 technically only goes back to 1967. Both can be considered the best in their class, respectively. But that's just my opinion. The numbers speak for themselves in my mind.

I'm not trying to say anything bad about the 3800, just that people are trying to turn into more of a "tragedy" than it really is. A good engine, with lineage back to the Fireball V6 has been canceled. But all the current 3.8L shares with that engine is a OHV design and its displacement. EVERYTHING else is different. It's one thing to say an engine is a descendant of another engine, it's another to consider it all one line of the same engine.
