    Default F body brake swap

I was at my local parts pull yard and was working on removing parts from a 98GTP (same as mine only a sedan). It just so happens a 3.4L 4th gen Firebird was right next to it with all the brakes and suspension on it. It looked like the rotors were the same size as the GTP, are they the same? I thought they were supposed to be approx. 1" bigger. Is this swap only beneficial from a V8 model Firebird/Camaro? I looked in past threads, but couldn't find anything to ans. my question. Thanks.

The only F-body brakes that are compatible are from the 98-02 F-body's.

so would a V6 model be the same as what i have on my 98GTP or do i need to take it off of a V8 model. they look like the same diameter rotors on the V6 as the ones that are on my 98 GTP.

From what I've heard some of the V6's have the dual piston calipers too.

Well must be this one I saw didn't have that set up. It looked similar to the one on the GP. I'll have to look around some more then. What exactly do I need off the V8 donor car? Rotors, Calipers, Caliper brackets, etc??

False. All 98+ F-Bodies have the "upgrade" from brakes.

Even the V6 models? I'll have to check the year of that car again. I think the later modeled F bodies had the 3.8 in them? This one had a 3.4L.

14MM bushing (this is used so you can simply re-use the bolts off the Caliper brackets and not tap them)

what are the bushings used for? couldn't i just use the caliper bolts that come with the Fbody? will the brake hoses transfer right over?

The bushings are to re-use the F-Body bolts. They are 12mm, whereas stock for the Grand Prix is 14mm, so folks use the sleeves to compensate for the 2mm. Please do not do that. Just get the F-Body bracket tapped to the 14mm size and use the stock Grand Prix bolts.

oh definately, i would just tap the bolt holes. i have all the tools to do that and have done it before. i'd want to use the larger bolts (stronger) anyway. is that common practice for most people to use the bushing? seems easy enough to tap the holes.

Anyone know if 2004 GTO (yes, gto) front duel piston calipers will fit on my 00' GTP if I go with a 12' rotor? I called my GM dealership and ZZPerformance today but they were unsure if the GTP will accept the GTO rotors. They look like the same duel piston calipers from the F-body cars. Thanks

Just a word of advice for ya.....Don't expect a GM Dealership to really help you like this. They don't want to be held liable for any damage caused by selling you different parts that aren't designed to fit your vehicle. Sounds dumb to some people, but we can't just come out and say that we will sell you F-Body brakes for your Grand Prix.

    Amen.

Seen too many calipers come loose, a mounting bolt falls out, (usually the top bolt) the caliper flips up, and grinds on the inside of the rim.

I remember seeing one rim that was damn near completely sawed in half, but that was the 12" factory brake upgrade, and a bolt didn't get tight. That came loose on a driving course, and he didn't know what that noise was for a few laps, and I think when he lost air pressure was when he finally stopped. The caliper sawing through the inside of the rim was what made him loose all his air pressure.
