So when I crank the car it starts perfect...When I shift into Reverse it feels like there is no pressure, but if I give it gas it goes in reverse no problem...When i shift from reverse into drive The RPMs go up to around 1200 (from 900) and the car wants to pull without any gas...It only does this when its a cold start...I just had this tranny rebuilt a year ago, and the fluid is still nice and bright red (and filled to a good level). I took it to the shop and they said there is nothing wrong, but I figured id ask some advice from you guys.

1998 GTP. I have the tranny out already, it had lost 4th gear and I replaced it with a used 2000 gtp tranny. Now the 2000's tranny is slipping in 1st like once a week. So I'm thinking I should just replace the clutch hub and pop that tranny back in. It always shifted great otherwise.

So my question is "How tuff is it to replace that hub? Is there any literature on the web I could read on how to do it?"

I got a transmission from a place called pull-a-part. Me and my dad had to pull it ourselves, but after it is all said and done it was only 82 bucks...

I got a transmission from a place called pull-a-part. Me and my dad had to pull it ourselves, but after it is all said and done it was only 82 bucks with a 30 day warranty.

We just got it in on Sunday and it seemed to work ok. (No telling how long the car had been sitting that we got it from which was a 97 buick park avenue ultra)

So the next day my dad brings the car to me and the transmission is whining and doing the whole long shift thing. *note* my dad told me he was at a drive thru and my car clunked and sounded like the engine was going to blow up but then seemed to correct itself except for the whining

So I drive the car back home after dropping him off which is a good 20 mile drive and I notice that it isnt kicking down at 65-70 mph and kicks down rather easily to 1st gear. So I slow down a bit and put it into 2nd gear on the console and the engine just revs up when I step on the gas. I let the car sit over night thinking great I don't have a 2nd gear. Then I start it up in the morning on my way to work and the whining noise is gone and 2nd gear works. The SES light is on when I start it up and I get the pesky p0717 code, but the transmission does great the whole way to work. We clear the code and on the way home I get one long shift and that is all. *note* the temperature never went over 200 on the way home as it did the day before when it was whining real bad.

So no real question here just kinda boggled about all of this weird stuff that goes on with everything I have been reading about these transmissions. As long as it keeps working I guess its a good deal for only 82 bucks. The only question I got would be is it a good investment to get a separate transmission cooler? Cause the cooler my engine is the less the transmission I had before and this one seem to act up.

Applying the brake, with the transmission in drive, and pushing the gas down, from 1000 to 2000 RPM's I hear a popping sound coming from the passenger side. It sounds like popcorn popping or grinding your teeth. The CV axle itself turns a little bit as the motor rocks back. While in drive and sitting still sometimes I hear a rattle noise that's similar to the popping, shifting to neutral usually stops it. This noise is only in drive, 3rd, 2nd, or 1st. It does not do it in reverse, neutral, or park. Is this the axle going bad, or the whole transmission?

Ok.. I hate to bust in on the GTP group asking a question that actually goes along with my Montana minivan trans. But hay the trans is the same. And if it makes anyone feel any better I do have a 1999 Grand prix GTP (140k miles with no trans problems) Maybe will talk about that car some day. It sorta has a stumble problem to (but that isn't trans but Ignition or fuel related if I were asked)

Anyway. The posts I've read seem to be complaining about shifts 1-2 3-4 or what ever... And to me the van (once going) seems to shift fine. I think I've detected some "later" then i'd expect shifts lately but they were smooth. And perhaps I just had my foot more in it then other times..

So Van has 171k miles on it. Had a good life. But now some times after being stopped for a while at a light or perhaps getting back on the gas after a stop sign or even slightly rolled stop sign. it feels like it falls out of gear and as you continue to press on the gass it grabs and lets go (like perhaps a 1 way bearing might grab and go loose and grab again.)

Guess you would call that a shutter but can be pretty violent..

Anyway in reading seems like the cure might be the pressure control solonoid. But talk about a major pain in the but to get to and change. Maybe ZZP's shift kit would be an easy try to..

Van does not present any codes for the issue...

Just wondering if anyone had any other thoughts on this. To me I'd sit and say well the car idles so low (<600 rpm now) that the trans line pressure probably dips below threshold and pops out of gear. then when more rpm is added it slams in and out as the pressure returns..

Really would like to avoid having to drop this trans out as it sounds like a major undertaking compaird to other trans (A604 in my lebaron, Muncie in my SS Chevelle) were to take out and re-do..) But anywho.. I know my A604 trans really would get pissed if it's pump was not producing enough pressure but anyway

Thanks for any input..
Does anybody has a list of compatible transmissions (i mean with few minor to none modifications/alterations) for a 2000 Grand Prix GT 3.8L N/A?

I found a lot of 4T65E used transmissions on line and i like to know if there are compatible with minor to none modifications.
Also there are some codes used parts search engines have for my year & model like BCB BRB and some same trans for other GM models like APB etc.
I don't know what those codes mean but there will be a list with a description of those types.

Thanks

This is a problem I have been dealing with for about a year and a half so I hope someone can help. Here it is, My transmission stays in first gear for atleast 5 minutes when I first start driving my car in the morning or when engine is cold. It will shift fine after that as long as I dont floor it when i am leaving a stop or a yield. can anyone help me out with this problem? One thing I can add is that when i am in first gear for the first time of the day. It dont feel like it gets all of first gear if thats makes any sense. Example, from a stop I accelerate slowly until about 19 mph and the rpms are at 3,000 then it just stops picking up speed and feels like i'm in neutral. I just cruise it until speed is at 10 mph then i accelerate again to about 20 mph and so on until second gear kicks in. I suspect the EPC or 1-2 shift solenoid since the resistance changes with temperature. I hope its not the first or second gear clutches. sorry for the long question. Can anyone help me cause I am eager to put my engine back in but can't cause I dont wanna bring it out again to fix the tranny.

While accelerating (my 2002 GP GT 127K miles) to pass at about 70mph recently, I had a sudden and temporary power loss and heard almost a squeaking sound from engine compartment. I then
noticed that if I took my foot of gas pedal, rpms would immed drop to near 1000 rpm...and when I then tried to moderately accelerate, engine would race back up to 3,000ish rpm before producing any more acceleration (and rpms required to travel 60mph are now about 3,000 rather than normal 1900ish). There is no check engine light. On the plus side, car seems to drive normally in 3rd gear (albeit w/less fuel economy etc). I do expect to go to a tranny shop to get a def diagnosis, but does this just sound like a simple loss of 4th gear? Could I expect to get a lot more miles out of the car if I just keep in 3 from now on, as cost of fixing wouldn't be worth it

Thanks for any insight.
