excessive wheel/road noise after tranny rebuild

I had my tranny rebuilt (only 7 years old, thanks a lot asshole owner who owned it the previous 6 years) back at the end of december. Now that it's warm outside, I'd like to know where to go with this:

THere is a lot of noise at around 30mph. Sounds like a buttload of low-frequency resonance, and it actually gets better as speeds increase. The front wheel bearings were put on before the tranny rebuild. I've already taken the car back to the shop 3 times because they hosed the abs wiring (and I STILL need to splice the left side harness since they don't know that the sensor has to be mounted in the 6 oclock position, not 12, so it's split wide open now).

Where should I start looking to eliminate this noise that did not exist before the tranny rebuild? They had claimed it was tire noise and that it would go away with the tires rotated to the rear, and of course that did not change anything.

Also, out of curiosity, are the abs sensors swappable between bearings?

If something changed that wasn't there before then it's in the trans.

4t65e-hd. I've been reading and I guess I should do some hard cornering at speed to see the noise disappears to rule out a bearing going bad already. If it's in the trans then I'm gonna just run witih it more until the warranty is nearing its expiration date.

Can you describe the noise a little better please. Maybe a vid.

The low-pitched noise, that aamco claimed to be tire noise (which did not exist before I took it there), is hardly picked up by my phone. It really sounds like a low-pitched grumble and resonates quite well in the car at around 30mph.

There's also a higher pitched noise associated with acceleration in higher gears that's dependant on throttle and not speed (that higher pitched noise goes away in neutral and doesn't come back while revving in neutral with the car still in motion).

I made comments in the video of where the low-pitched and higher-pithced noises are, but the low pitched is difficult to hear (the low pitched noise gets worse with speed. It actually kinda oscillates in frequency, from what I'm guessing is based upon the wheel spin. Maybe I do have bad tires).

I am also open to the possiblity of suspension failures causing this. I will say that I have noticed that every speed bump/dip in the road I hit, I hear a loud squeak coming from the left side and the car fishtails slightly. However, I can't reproduce the squeaking noise while pushing down on the car or anything.

Check your wheel bearings. Does the whine seem to be coming from one side of the car or from the front center?

I had something like this when i changed my front wheel bearings(timkens).... Could really hear it on the highway. Was told they just needed to be broken in was all..

The whine is from the front center it seems, along with that rumbling. The bearings have about 2-3k each.

Just want to add that I heard this keeping it in first, so it's not gear dependent. It's definitely speed dependent. Another thing I found, was when I was goign 20 and shifted to 1st, it sounded like something made a loud clank noise as the car shuddered/jerked. I was expecting a little something for the downshift but not that :| Maybe I need to check mounts? How many are there/where are they located?

I bought new tires, going to have them installed when I get back home next week. Will keep you updated.

stop doing that.

your engine mounts are under the harmonic balancer, and the trans mount is on the other side opposite of it.


heres a vid for the trans mount, its a regal, but the job is the same for a gtp. motor mount is the same job as well. just looks different.

I don't think I'll understand this, other then by coincidence, but I had new tires put on today and I'll be damned if I'm not driving a cadillac now. I can't believe it really was the tires.

ive seen tires be the problem a few times here, and had some issues my self with bad tires. new front tires also smoothed out my ride.

It's been seven and a half months, it's getting rebuilt AGAIN. Warranties are great.

You did mention AAMCO....don't expect much, might as well be Wal-Mart Tire & Lube Express rebuilding it.
