Dumb question (Oil)

I have no idea what oil was used in the car before I bought it (tho I found receipts from day 1 since the car was bought) Can I use Mobile 1 synthetic? Or should I say... should I use it? Once I change my oil for the 1st time I'm gonna stick with that oil... till death do us part.

Use whatever you want as long as it is the right spec. Mobil 1 5w-30 is fine. I switch oils frequently. synth, conventional, Mobil 1, Gastrol GTX, Castrol Syntec, Royal Purple, Amsoil. Royal Purple is my favorite by far, but it's pretty pricey. Right now I have Castrol Syntec in the engine.

Nope, it does not matter.

On a motorcycle with wet clutches the sythetic saturates the clutch material and evidently if you switch back to dyno, the dyno oil is not able to displace the synth.

they have to be compatible with any oil, doesn't matter what type as long as it meets the standards

I agree doesn't matter what oil you use.

More importantly is to make sure you maintain your oil system. Meaning, change it on a regular basis (3k miles), as well as the filter. Or, run high quality synthetic oil and have an oil analysis done every 3k miles to establish a good OCI for your vehicle and driving habits.

LOL, dang, called out no less.

I tend to be, as Im sure you know, pretty passionate about this subject so I chose to kinda bow out of this one. Although, having a few motorcycle customers I am interested in any documentation on what Lee posted because for the some 7 years Ive been in business Ive never experienced that problem. But I'll have to refrain on that too much as it would probably take this topic way off to left field.

As far as the wet clutches and synthetic oil and returning to dino, it's pretty common knowledge about not being able to go back to conventional. Basically those that wanted to do this had to change clutch packs out. A search for Moly and wet clutches may turn up something quickly. /off topic

I have never ever ran across that and I have had customers switch back to conventional after using synthetic. But moly is a friction modifier and I can see that being an issue with clutch packs. But if you use a synthetic without friction modifiers, then its a mute issue.

moot? You are correct about the Moly being a friction modifier. Doesn't matter since we don't have to worry about wet clutch issues. Not sure where the stories about synth versus conventional in the auto industry came from. Thought this may have crossed over from the motorcycle people.

Like said above, you can switch Full Syn oil without issue. But its best to try and religious with whatever brand of oil you get. You don't have to, but it takes the guess work out of what you are using and easier to explain to somone else might have questions about the type and brand of oil you use

I personally am stuck Mobil 1 Full Syn 10w30 myself. And K&N Oversize Oil filters to allow me a full 5qts of oil
