4k limit at 90??

My 97gtp had a very bad tranny. Had it fixed completely rebuilt they told me to check it out bring it back for a check up. Today I was driving and it started to act wierd, would randomly down shift.. So I was like ok wrk il exp some more so I have more to show. I was on the empty hwy, and I decoded to smash it a bit. Got up to 90 and I realized the RPM JUST STAYS. At 4k?? It seemed that it was still increasing speed a tid bit tho... I could have sworn I have been that fast once before the tranny was rebuilt and it didn't so thT.. Is that a limiter or did they mess something up??

I was on the empty road, and I stepped on the gas a bit. I Got the gtp up to 90 and I realized the RPMs JUST STAYed At 4k?? It seemed that it was still increasing speed a bit tho... I could have sworn (before the tranny was rebuilt) I had been that fast without the RPMs being stopped at 4k? Is that a limiter or did dirks mess something up??

Did it seem like it was misfiring or the trans was slipping?

It's hard to tell it's a smooth car it does seem to be a limiter but because the tranny was shifting funny earlier on makes me wonder because I thought I've done close to 100 before and I don't remember it stoping at 4k.. I was just curioous if the gtps are governed that way or not? Anyone know a top speed limit?? I'm going to have dirks check it out again I paid alot for that rebuild. I wish I wouldn't saved that money and put it towards a camaro;(

They are limited to 126 stock.

Could be KR and the ECU is pulling timing to stop it from destroying the motor. Are you running at least 91 octane in it? If not, then stop pushing it into boost and get some in there or you will be putting a new motor in it too.

O didn't know these need premium fuel, ok next time I fill up I'll go premium I'm running the cheap has I think it's 89. Maybe I can get the higher rated stuff at the pump and get a bottle of octane booster?? If gas is the issue then cool I guess better somthing else but my little Saturn can go faster than 90. It just seems wired that fuel would be the reason.;(

octane booster is garbage. dont waste your money.

So it doesn't go passéd 90mph.. I should get plug wires fuel filter maybe the PVC valve? This sucks. Not that I constantly GP that fast I rarely go 80 but to just know there is somthing going on annoys me!;(

The car goes past 90. The only limiter currently holding the car back is you. Either the fuel or a tune up etc, that's if you didn't chip a piston already.

The limiters in the pcm remove fuel and timing to make the motor fall on it's face. When you hit one of those limiters you feel robbed of all your manhood. You'll know when you hit the limiter.

Could also be a clogged converter.

All I know is if you are running anything less than 91 in a boosted car and beating on it, especially well into 3rd where there is a good amount of load...it's probably internally damaged...no?

any chance it used to be a rental car and has a Governor of some sort on it? if it pulls hard to 90 and quits pulling....

In it last night. I don't think it was a rental car, I just hope it's not ruined;( what do tune ups cost? Ballpark I know they vary. I car about my car or I wouldn't have paid so much to get the tranny rebuilt. And it's a pretty strong car it just seems to cut of at the higher speed. I'll run this premium in it maybe get some plug wires. A tune up. Look into a new cat andthen. Try a 90+ run again..

will the rpm's go over 4,000 in first gear? and try to run 93 octane.

How about stop beating on it too?

There is no place that has a 90mph speeed limit really.

Engine Fell Out.

I'm noT beating on it 90 shouldn't be to tough for it.. I wanted to see if the tranny would act up in any other gears. And all because it was acting dumb as dirks needs to take it back in.
It does go over 4k in every gear, I do notice that when the boost is reading high it does feel "held back"
I don't know where to get 93 octane I seen 91 everywhere..

91 will work if that's all you got.

So like I said I put 91 in it yesterday, I'm hoping that Is the issue, reading on about this seems to me thT it is a BIG deal to put higher octane gas in it. I'm glad to learn something new. I thank all of you.

Doesn't the cluster or fuel door say "Premium unleaded only" ? I know on my Regal GS it does, on my Bonneville it did. Not giving you a hard time, but I think it says it.

Check your tune up stuff like you said and likely your plugs got a little chewed up from the low octane. Also..stay away from bosch or platinum plugs. They don't last long in our waste spark setup.
