Default 2001 Grand prix air conditioner blower goes to slow speed.

Odd thing going on with 2001 GP A/C. Works great, then will go to slow speed only. Turn A/C off for short time, and will go back to normal operation. Any ideas????? Fan speed control dirty maybe????

    Blower motor resistor maybe?

Thanx FordMan, any idea of what ohm value that resistor should be? Also, could it possibly be a relay kicking out?

i just replaced my blower motor today and learned a little trick for testing the resistor block. i wanted to make sure that it was the resistor block and was surprised to find out that it was the motor instead. disconnect the power to the blower and connect some spade connectors to the terminals in the plug, then attach the oter end to a old headlight, im talkin a old glass one. turn your blower on and watch the light, if the light gets brighter and dimmer as you move the fan speed selector than you have a good resistor, and a bad motor. if not it's in your motor. Also if spade connectors wont work for the blower motor plug use pins and alligator clips. hope this helps!!

OK, thnx destroyer85. The fan motor will work on all speeds when I am running around town. When I am on the interstate running constant speeds and on a rather smooth road is when I have the fan slow down. I have had all sorts of electrical issues with this car I bought new in 01. Low fuel light coming on when I turn the wipers on, abs and traction control light come on whenever they want to, cooling fans only come on when A/C is on, etc. Weird stuff. I'll get to the resistor pack, put a load on it and see if the voltages change.

Which climate control do you have? The automatic will .....automatically slow or increase fan to maintain temps etc.

Is it digital or manual climate control? If its digital it might be switching the outside vent on and off when gets to the right temp.

Well, as usual with this car, it has corrected itself for now. The car has manual climate controls. Last two road trips the A/C has worked correctly!!!!????? I have numerous odd ball electrical issues with this car. Thanks for the help guys, but for now the A/C is working fine.
