thanks but it turns out the alternator might be fine. after taking a closer look, i think it's the tensioner pulley. i just made a post about it here:

but i'll definitely let you know by next week if i need that alternator.

still got that 98 alternator? mines going any day now. how's $40 w/ local pickup? i'm just down in plainfield, about an hour and a half from you. thanks man!
